An e-commerce website lets customers in Kenya browse your products, place orders and pay online, usually with M-Pesa and card payments. It costs more than a standard business website because it needs a product catalogue, cart and checkout, payment integration, order notifications and careful testing.

This guide covers what an online shop in Kenya needs, how M-Pesa payments fit in, what affects the cost, and how to prepare.

Do you need an e-commerce website?

You probably do if:

  • You sell physical products and take orders through DMs and phone calls.
  • You lose sales because customers can't see prices, stock or delivery options.
  • You want to sell outside your shop's opening hours.
  • Tracking orders and payments manually is taking too much time.

If you mostly sell services, such as consulting, cleaning or design, a standard business website with a quote form and WhatsApp button is usually a better fit.

Order notifications Email, SMS or WhatsApp updates for you and the customer

Admin dashboard Add products, update stock and manage orders yourself

How M-Pesa payments work on a website

There are two common approaches:

  1. Direct M-Pesa integration (Daraja API). The customer enters their phone number at checkout and gets an M-Pesa prompt (STK push) on their phone. Payment is confirmed automatically. This needs a Safaricom paybill or till number and a technical integration.
  2. Payment gateway. A third-party provider handles M-Pesa, cards and sometimes other wallets in one checkout. Setup is simpler, but the provider charges transaction fees.

In both cases, test the full flow with real phones and small amounts before launch.

What affects the cost of an e-commerce website in Kenya

  • Number of products and how much product setup is included.
  • Payment methods: M-Pesa direct integration, a gateway, cards or all of these.
  • Delivery logic: flat rates, zones or courier integration.
  • Custom features: wholesale pricing, product variations, bookings, loyalty or multiple languages.
  • Content: product photography and descriptions.

How to prepare before you build

  1. List your products with names, prices, sizes, colours and stock.
  2. Take good photos on a plain background, or budget for product photography.
  3. Decide your delivery areas and fees.
  4. Set up your M-Pesa paybill or till in your business name.
  5. Write your policies: delivery, returns and refunds.
  6. Decide who manages orders and how quickly you'll respond.

Getting your shop found

A new online shop won't sell if no one sees it:

  • Optimise product and category pages for search with clear titles and descriptions.
  • Set up a Google Business Profile if you have a physical location.
  • Run Google Ads or Instagram ads for your best sellers.
  • Share products consistently on social media.

Frequently asked questions

Can my website accept M-Pesa payments?

Yes. Either through direct M-Pesa integration (Safaricom's Daraja API, with an STK push prompt) or through a payment gateway that handles M-Pesa and cards together.

How much does an e-commerce website cost in Kenya?

It depends on the number of products, payment methods, delivery logic and custom features. Bravura quotes e-commerce on scope; our estimator gives an indicative figure.

Do I need a paybill or till number?

Yes. For direct M-Pesa integration you need a paybill or till number registered to your business.
