Local SEO in Nairobi: How to Rank on Google Maps
A step-by-step guide to Google Business Profile and local SEO for Nairobi businesses: setup, categories, reviews, website signals and local mentions.

Local SEO is how your business appears when people nearby search on Google, for example "plumber near me", "clinic in Westlands" or "company profile designer Nairobi". The most important tool for local SEO is your free Google Business Profile, which controls how you appear on Google Maps and in the local results at the top of search.
Here's how to set it up properly and improve your chances of appearing first.
What is local SEO?
When someone searches for a service with local intent, Google often shows a map with three businesses (the "local pack") above the normal results. Those three spots get a large share of the clicks and calls.
Google decides which businesses to show based on three things:
- Relevance: how well your profile and website match the search.
- Distance: how close you are to the person searching, or to the location they typed.
- Prominence: how well known and trusted your business is, including reviews and mentions online.
You can't change where the customer is, but you can strongly influence relevance and prominence.
Step 1: Claim and verify your Google Business Profile
- Go to business.google.com and sign in with your business Google account.
- Add your business name exactly as customers know it. Don't add keywords to the name; it can get your profile suspended.
- Choose your primary category carefully. It's one of the strongest ranking signals.
- If customers visit you, add your address. If you serve customers at their location, choose service areas instead.
- Add your phone number and website.
- Complete verification. In Kenya this is often a short video showing your signage, workspace and proof of business.
Step 2: Complete every section
A complete profile ranks better and converts more visitors into calls:
- Categories: one primary category plus relevant secondary ones.
- Description: clearly explain what you do and where you work, in natural language.
- Services: list each service with a short description and price where you can.
- Hours: keep them accurate, including public holidays.
- Photos: your premises, team, products and real work. Add new photos regularly.
- Contact options: phone, website and WhatsApp chat.
Step 3: Get reviews, and reply to them
Reviews are one of the biggest local ranking factors, and they're what customers read before calling.
- Ask every satisfied customer, ideally within a week of finishing their job.
- Send your review link directly on WhatsApp so it takes one tap.
- Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and promptly.
- Never buy reviews or write them yourself. It breaks Google's rules and can get your profile removed.
Step 4: Make your website support your profile
Your website tells Google what you do in more detail:
- Create a separate page for each main service, with the service and location in the page title, for example "Company Profile Design in Nairobi".
- Show your business name, phone number and location the same way on your website, profile and social media.
- Embed a map or clear directions on your contact page if customers visit you.
- Make sure the site is fast and works well on phones.
Step 5: Build local mentions
Mentions of your business on other trusted websites help Google see you as established:
- Kenyan business directories and industry associations.
- Supplier and partner websites.
- Local news or blog features.
- Client websites, for example a "Designed by" credit if you build websites.
Keep your name, phone number and address identical everywhere.
Step 6: Stay active
- Post updates, offers or recent projects on your profile every week or two.
- Answer questions in the Q&A section.
- Update photos and services when things change.
How long does local SEO take?
A newly verified, complete profile can start appearing for some searches within weeks. Ranking in the top three for competitive searches in Nairobi usually takes months of consistent reviews, content and activity.
Common local SEO mistakes
- Using a different phone number or business name on different platforms.
- Choosing a vague category such as "Consultant" when a specific one exists.
- Leaving the profile untouched after setup.
- Ignoring negative reviews.
- A website with one generic page instead of a page per service.
