Facebook and Instagram are where millions of Kenyans scroll every day, which makes Meta ads one of the fastest ways for a business to reach new customers. But it's also easy to spend money on likes and views that never turn into sales.

This guide explains how Facebook and Instagram ads work in Kenya, what they cost, how to set them up properly and how to make sure your budget brings in real enquiries.

How do Facebook and Instagram ads work?

Facebook and Instagram ads are both run from Meta Ads Manager. You choose:

  1. An objective: what you want people to do, such as send a WhatsApp message, visit your website, fill in a lead form or buy online.
  2. An audience: who should see the ad, by location, age, interests and behaviour, or people who already know you.
  3. A budget: a daily or total amount Meta will spend.
  4. Placements: where the ad appears, such as Facebook feed, Instagram feed, Stories and Reels.
  5. Creative: the image, video and text people see.

Meta then shows your ad to people in that audience who are most likely to take the action you chose.

How much do Facebook and Instagram ads cost in Kenya?

There's no fixed price. You set the budget, and costs depend on your audience, objective, competition and how good your ads are. In practice:

  • You control the spend. You can start with a small daily budget and increase it once you see what works.
  • Costs rise in busy seasons, such as December and back-to-school periods, when more advertisers compete for attention.
  • Strong creative lowers costs. Ads that people engage with tend to be shown more cheaply.
  • VAT applies. Meta has charged 16% VAT on ads bought by Kenyan advertisers since late 2022, so factor it into your budget.

A useful way to plan is to work backwards from the cost of an enquiry, as we explain in our guide to Google Ads costs in Kenya. The same thinking applies to Meta: decide what a new customer is worth, then test whether your ads bring enquiries at a cost that makes sense.

Our digital advertising management is a monthly fee for planning, creative and optimisation. Ad spend is always separate and paid directly to Meta.

Best ad objectives for Kenyan businesses

  • Click-to-WhatsApp ads: ideal for service businesses. A tap opens a WhatsApp chat with your business, which is how many Kenyans prefer to ask questions.
  • Lead ads: a short form opens inside Facebook or Instagram, so people can request a quote without leaving the app.
  • Website traffic or conversion ads: best when your website is fast, mobile-friendly and has tracking set up.
  • Sales or catalogue ads: for online shops with products and M-Pesa checkout.
  • Awareness ads: useful for launches and brand recognition, but harder to link to sales.

Choose the objective that matches the action you actually want. If you want enquiries, don't optimise for likes.

How to target the right audience

  • Location: target the towns, counties or radius around your business that you can actually serve.
  • Interests and behaviour: reach people likely to need your product, such as homeowners, parents or business owners.
  • Custom audiences: show ads to people who visited your website, engaged with your page or are already customers.
  • Lookalike audiences: reach new people similar to your best customers.

Start broad enough to give Meta room to find buyers, then narrow based on results.

Ad creative that works in Kenya

  • Design for the phone first: square or vertical formats, large text and a clear focal point.
  • Show the product or result in the first second of a video.
  • Put the offer and price up front if they're competitive.
  • Use real photos of your products, team or work where you can.
  • Make the next step obvious: "WhatsApp us", "Get a quote" or "Shop now".
  • Test two or three versions and keep the one that brings the cheapest enquiries.

Our social media design and content creation teams produce ad creative for campaigns like these. See examples in our finance and app social campaigns.

Set up tracking before you spend

Without tracking, you can't tell which ads bring customers. Before launching:

  1. Install the Meta Pixel (and Conversions API where possible) on your website.
  2. Track key actions: quote requests, WhatsApp clicks, calls and purchases.
  3. Connect Google Analytics to see how ad visitors behave on your site.
  4. Agree what counts as a result, so reports focus on enquiries and sales, not impressions.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Boosting posts without a plan. The "Boost" button is quick but offers fewer options than Ads Manager.
  • Optimising for the wrong goal, such as engagement when you want enquiries.
  • Sending traffic to a slow or confusing website.
  • Changing everything every day. Give campaigns time to learn before judging them.
  • Ignoring messages. Ads that bring WhatsApp chats only work if someone replies quickly.

Facebook and Instagram ads vs Google Ads

Google Ads reach people who are already searching for what you sell, so intent is high. Facebook and Instagram ads reach people based on who they are and what they like, which is great for creating demand, launches, visual products and retargeting. Many businesses use both. Frequently asked questions

How much do Facebook ads cost in Kenya?

There's no fixed price. You set a daily or total budget, and costs depend on your audience, objective, competition and creative. Meta adds 16% VAT to ads bought by Kenyan advertisers.

What is the best Facebook ad objective for a Kenyan business?

For service businesses, click-to-WhatsApp and lead ads usually work best. Online shops do well with sales or catalogue ads once tracking is set up.

Should I boost posts or use Ads Manager?

Ads Manager gives you more control over objectives, audiences, placements and tracking, so it usually delivers better results than boosting posts.

Are Facebook ads better than Google Ads?

They do different jobs. Google Ads reach people already searching for what you sell, while Facebook and Instagram ads create demand and retarget visitors. Many businesses use both.
