Google Ads in Kenya has two separate costs: the advertising spend you pay Google for clicks, and the management fee you pay an agency or specialist to plan, run and improve your campaigns. There's no fixed price per click. Costs are set by an auction and depend on your industry, location, competition and how well your ads and landing pages perform.

This guide explains how Google Ads pricing works, how to plan a starting budget, and how to avoid paying for clicks that never become customers.

How Google Ads pricing works

Google Ads mostly charges per click (cost per click, or CPC). When someone searches, Google runs an auction among advertisers targeting that search. The price you pay depends on:

  • Competition: how many businesses bid on the same keywords.
  • Your bid strategy: how much you allow Google to spend per click.
  • Quality: Google rewards ads and landing pages that are relevant and useful with better positions at lower cost.
  • Location and timing: some areas and times of day are more competitive.

You set a daily budget, and Google won't spend more than about 30 times that amount across a month.

How to find realistic costs for your keywords

Use Keyword Planner, which is free inside your Google Ads account:

  1. Go to Tools → Keyword Planner → Get search volume and forecasts.
  2. Enter your main keywords, for example "website design company nairobi".
  3. Set the location to Kenya or your target area.
  4. Note the estimated cost range per click.

These are estimates, but they give you a realistic starting point for your industry.

How to plan a starting budget

Work backwards from the number of enquiries you want. Here's a simple example with illustrative numbers (your own will differ):

Step Example
Estimated cost per click KSh 100
Clicks per day for a meaningful test 10
Daily budget KSh 1,000
Monthly ad spend (about 30 days) KSh 30,000
If 5% of clicks become enquiries About 15 enquiries per month
Cost per enquiry About KSh 2,000

Then ask: is one enquiry worth KSh 2,000 to my business? If one in three enquiries becomes a client worth KSh 30,000, the answer is clearly yes.

What affects how much you pay per enquiry

  • Keyword choice: specific, high-intent searches ("company profile design cost Nairobi") convert better than broad ones ("design").
  • Negative keywords: blocking searches like "free", "jobs", "course" and "template" stops wasted clicks.
  • Landing page: sending people to a page about the exact service, with prices and a clear quote button, converts far better than a homepage.
  • Ad schedule: running ads when you can answer calls and WhatsApp messages.
  • Conversion tracking: without it, Google can't learn which clicks become enquiries.

Management fees

Management covers keyword research, campaign setup, writing ads, tracking, ongoing optimisation and reporting. Agencies price this as a monthly fee, a one-off setup fee, or both. Whatever the model:

  • Ad spend and management fees should always be separate and visible.
  • Campaigns should run in an account you own.
  • You should get regular reports on enquiries and cost per enquiry, not just clicks.

Common Google Ads mistakes that waste money

  1. Letting Google's default settings show ads on the Display Network and Search Partners.
  2. Using only broad match keywords.
  3. No negative keywords.
  4. Sending traffic to the homepage.
  5. No conversion tracking.
  6. Judging results after a few days instead of a few weeks.

Should you run Google Ads or SEO?

Google Ads brings enquiries quickly and stops when you stop paying. SEO builds visibility that lasts but takes months. Many businesses use both. Read our full comparison of SEO vs Google Ads for Kenyan SMEs.

Frequently asked questions

How much do Google Ads cost in Kenya?

There's no fixed price. You pay per click through an auction, and costs depend on your industry and competition. Use Google's Keyword Planner for estimates, set a daily budget you're comfortable with and measure cost per enquiry.

Is the management fee included in ad spend?

No. Ad spend is paid to Google. Management fees are paid to whoever runs your campaigns, and the two should always be shown separately.

How soon do Google Ads bring enquiries?

Often within days of launch, once ads are approved. Allow a few weeks of data to optimise cost per enquiry.
